@Paul, could be a wand or rod of some sort. Might be a riding quirt but that might be one in the right hand.

It’s a great get-up for a warrior-mage.

There is nothing new under the sun. Fantastic. Funny what you miss when you just read: I’d’ve thought I’d run across this in my general noodling about Scythians, but apparently it’s not considered “noteworthy” or some such by whoever I read.
